For example, in Santa Cruz County, local officials were able to achieve a 25-percent jail population reduction and significant cost savings by instituting risk-based assessment strategies at the pretrial and probation supervision levels, and using alternative approaches with low-level offenders and technical violators. Speakers from California jurisdictions as diverse as East Palo Alto, Santa Cruz and Napa and from other states such as Texas, Oregon and Colorado showcased innovative strategies by local law enforcement at the pretrial, sentencing and supervision stages. It is clear the Governor recognizes the need for this constitutional guarantee to protect vital local services.” Counties are extremely concerned about the significant new responsibilities the state has imposed on us without the constitutional protections that ensure ongoing, reliable funding. “We thank the Governor for his continued leadership and commitment to making realignment a success. “Today’s conference demonstrated the great work being done in California and across the country that can be incorporated into the local realignment planning process,” said Riverside County Supervisor John Tavaglione, President of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC). Held at the Sacramento Convention Center, “Innovations in Public Safety and Justice in California: Advancing Effective Justice Realignment” highlighted successful evidence-based strategies and programs from around California and the country that can help counties reduce recidivism and costs while enhancing public safety. Under the shift, counties rather than the state, will take responsibility for the custody, treatment, and supervision of individuals convicted of specified nonviolent, non-serious, non-sex crimes. In his speech, Brown promised a constitutional amendment to fund realignment, slated to go into effect October 1. Reaper doesn't behave gracefully when you open a project whose effects are missing authorization, that is, Reaper takes forever to realize "hey, these plugins aren't going to work", and get about its business. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. I have made sure to switch my licence activations to the new computer. Ive now re-downloaded the setup for Ilok Licence manager and found some troubleshooting programs. Studio One v3 has installed perfectly well, as have my kontakt libraries, but anything associated with iLok Licence manager - East West Composer Cloud and some Air Plugins - cant be found by Studio One. Cant seem to edit anymore so Ill just respond here. Faster, and the new 'hidden' section is great. The update worked fine here (W7圆4), and the new manager is a clear improvement. Then reboot and start the installer as administrator (right-click). I'm very happy to have my Slate plugins available once again, and grateful that the Waves License Center doesn't use iLok. I have tried 2 separate machines both with the same verion of ilok license manager and pro tools, both give errors when trying to start pro tools and the license manager: 'This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin 'windows' in ''. Tried installing the 32 bit ILok manager, errored out saying that it works only on the 32 bit version of Windows. Use the uninstaller provided with the new download to clean up the old data. This thread shows this to be not a new problem: Okay I reinstalled Windows 7 and now everything seems to be working fine now (I found out I couldnt install other. display driver)) and very importantly before moving any of your data back onto the drive. I think because I'm a fast track insider they were interested in seeing the problem.īut the final word was that they couldn't fix the problem, MS had to, with MS promising to address the issue in an upcoming build, which they have today. ![]() You can't do great things and break barriers without criticism from others, so it was interesting to hear quite a few voice recordings that pointed out negative things about Ran. Ran admits that being married again and having a daughter make his life complete. It would be hard to live in Ginny's shadow. I wonder how Ran's second wife feels about her tiny amount of screen time she got at the end of the film. A narrator might have been helpful to tie scenes together. The film jumps around in Ran's timeline, which might feel confusing for viewers. As the camera shows him going on a slow hike up a hill, a fast jogger runs by and he laughs, "Those were the days." His matter-of-fact attitude about life and death is revealed when he states, "We have a time down here and when it's done, it's done." THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: In addition to his quest to explore the world, he auditioned to be James Bond in the movies, and can now add filmmaker to his resume! He laments his old age and inability to do everything he used to be able to do. We get to see video clips of a young Prince Charles of England giving praise to Ran for his "gloriously mad" adventures. At the end of the film, we see a title card claiming that it's for sale. He's never had much money and currently drives a beat-up Ford Mondeo covered in duct tape. His adventures were notoriously expensive and he had to raise all of the funds himself. He's honest about why he goes on speaking tours: to pay the bills. Instead, he challenged people to look for something unique and off the beaten path. In the film, he criticized "packaged vacations" where tourists see all of the typical locations. He even had a daughter who is currently involved in conservation efforts. About losing her, he said, "The love was huge and time doesn't heal it." She encouraged him to marry again, which he did after her death. Sadly, they never had children together and she died of cancer. We get to see old footage of her as a young child, teenager, and wife. ![]() She described herself as "just a housewife", yet she was the impetus for many of the adventures and quite the adventurer and marketer herself. He talks of the ghosts of his father and grandfather who were war heroes, and how he doesn't want to disappoint them. He admits that much of what he did in life was to become like his father. It's interesting to also learn that he grew up among mostly women: mother and aunts. We learn that Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes inherited his title as 3rd baronet, but he prefers being called simply "Ran" because he explains he hasn't earned the title. The film combines amazing archive footage of past feats, as well as takes a look at what he's currently doing in his life. He truly pushed the boundaries of what a human can do. It has been said that the "man has become a myth." Watching the documentary certainly made me want to get off my couch and have an adventure! THINGS I LIKED:Īt the beginning of the movie, we see an almost endless list of Sir Ranulph Fiennes' accomplishments. He has broken countless world records and even discovered a lost city in Arabia! At age 60, he ran seven marathons on seven consecutive days, on seven continents.all after a double heart bypass! Explorer tells the definitive story of this extraordinary life of adventure. ![]() ![]() He's the only man ever to have circumnavigated the surface of the globe from pole to pole. (Fun fact: So far in 2017, only 13 percent of puzzles have been constructed by women, as crossword blogger Laura Braunstein flagged recently.) “The answer was LORELAI, and the sirens on the Rhine are of course ‘Lorelei,’ with an ‘e-i.’ Liz's clue was Rory's mom on Gilmore Girls, and I didn't think solvers should have to know that.” He had the constructor revise the answer to make it 1) more old and 2) refer to mythical women who are so distractingly beautiful that they cause men to crash their ships on the rocks, instead of, a cool mom from a television show that millions of women (and some men) love. “There was one thing about the construction I didn't like, and that was at 35 Down,” Shortz told The Atlantic. Shortz asked puzzle constructor Elizabeth Gorski to change an answer on her submitted puzzle. I also found an exchange from 2011 illuminating. “So I don’t expect to do this again.” This prescriptivism is curious when contrasted with the fact that the crossword does not acknowledge accent marks or the ñ. There is nothing inherently pejorative about it.” Still, he said, his aim is not to offend people in the puzzle. It’s in widespread use by ordinary people and publications. “At the time I wrote this clue (and yes, it was my clue), I had no idea that use of the word ‘illegal’ in this sense (as a noun) was controversial. “Those, to Juan.” “Those, to José.” “Those, to Jorge.” "Those, to Teodoro.” In 2012, Shortz clued ILLEGAL as “One caught by the border patrol.” When criticized, he turned again to the dictionary. The Times likes to sneak in Spanish answers, particularly ESOS, which means the clue will refer to a hypothetical Latino man. In 2012, Shortz faced off with a reader over ILLIN, which was clued as “Wack, in hip-hop.” The exchange revealed he relies on the Dictionary of Contemporary Slang, which is authored by an old white British man, filled with cringeworthy inaccuracies, and missing every slang word I thought to search it for including “molly” and “lol.” Even its fans acknowledge it is outdated as soon as it’s published.ĮSOS. Meanwhile, “Woman with an Afro, maybe” is SISTA. “Make a homie's turf unfit for habitation?” is POISONTHEHOOD. ![]() The puzzle has a lot of use for the word HOMIE. The Times clues for SISSIES include “Fraidy-cats” (2017), “Cream puffs” (2009), and “He-men's opposites” (2008), which I suppose is better than the archaic “pantywaists,” which is how it was clued twice in 1997 and twice again in 1998. The Times has historically shied away from clues of this nature, although it did clue ASAMAN with “One way to live transsexually” in 2007. “Transvestite” is listed as offensive in the Times style guide, which prefers “cross dresser,” but the term showed up in a 2013 clue: “Transvestite of song” (answer: LOLA, the subject of a Kinks song that details a romantic encounter at a club in Soho, London between a man and Lola, whose gender is called into question by the narrator). Meanwhile, “Oriental” showed up as a racial descriptor - “Oriental au pair,” or AMAH, and “Oriental royal,” or RAJAH - even after it was banned in the 1999 Times style guide. ![]() In other words, not much has changed since racist colonizers invented the term to describe native people living in cold climates on different continents. According to the crossword desk, ESKIMO is still a type of person who lives in an igloo, hunts seals, and is just as likely to be from Nome, Alaska as Nunavut, Canada. ![]() The crossword, by its nature, makes the word more offensive by oversimplifying its meaning and depriving it of context. Looking through the archives shows the Times has curbed its use of “Eskimo,” especially in headlines, although it still shows up occasionally and is sanctioned in the style guide. The puzzle uses outdated, offensive terms for people, even if the New York Times itself has moved away from them. The puzzle clearly isn’t seeking new talent or a new audience, and in its stodginess, it becomes clear that it is composed for a very particular reader with a very particular view of the world.ĮSKIMO. Smartphone prejudice aside, the Times crosswords, which have been edited by the famed crossword giant Will Shortz since 1993, are vexing for how outdated some of the clues and answers are, especially since in some cases the terms have been abandoned by the paper itself. Even the Times did not come out with its Android app for the puzzle until November 2016, seven years after it introduced an app for iPhone. The answer is that it helps me fall asleep, and there are no other good daily crossword apps for Android. Thesis: The New York Times crossword is very old and very white, which is bad and also makes for a boring puzzle.Īdrianne, then why do you continue to do the puzzle night after night, you ask.
